BTS’s Suga Opens Up About His Parents Disapproving His Dream And Tearing Up His Lyrics

The road to becoming a BTS member wasn’t easy — especially for Suga who, in the beginning, didn’t have the approval of his parents. In Rolling Stone, he reveals how he dealt with this pressure while pursuing his dreams.

Suga revealed that even though his parents didn’t support what he was doing, he doesn’t blame them for it.

My parents didn’t understand rap. They are a generation apart from myself, and they never listened to rap; it wasn’t part of the music that they listened to. So it’s only natural they were against what I was doing.

Similarly, there are no guarantees in the world of music and his parents were worried about what would happen if their son couldn’t succeed.

Of course, being a musician is a very unstable profession as well. So I can understand perfectly why my parents were against what I was doing.

Rolling Stone asked how his parents’ incessant disapproval, like tearing up his lyrics, influenced him. However, it surprisingly had an inverse effect on his motivation.

He revealed that it only drove him to succeed, telling Rolling Stone, “I think that motivated me or helped me work harder because there was something that I now had to prove.”

Part of his drive came from showing his parents that he could succeed.

I had to show my parents it was possible. So it drove and motivated me to work even harder.
