Recently, some of the leading actors of the series, as well as the show’s director, Hwang Dong Hyuk, and the show’s art director, Chae Kyung Sun, were interviewed by Netflix Korea to give fans an insight into some details they could only learn from the people behind the project.

During the interview, Chae Kyung Sun was asked, “What’s the meaning of the gift-wrapped coffin?”

This refers to the special way the coffins are adorned in the series before being taken to the incinerator. While some may believe that the gift-like styling is meant to tie into the childish element of the series, Chae Kyung Sun gave a much deeper reason.

I think I focused on the mind of the person who came up with the game. I imagined he’d think he gave the contestants a chance as if he’s a god.

Not only did she come up with

This is my gift to you. Even your bodies being disposed in the incinerator is a show of my mercy.

-Chae Kyung Sun

After sharing this inner dialogue for the founder of the game, she nonchalantly said, “So I thought, what if I put a ribbon on it?”

After Chae Kyung Sun delivered her explanation, Hwang Dong Hyuk decided to add another detail by sharing, “The main colors of the managers are black and pink. So I matched those tones, like BLACKPINK.”

This isn’t the first time the popular girl group has come up in relation to the show. To see more of how BLACKPINK has already tied into Squid Game, check out the article below:
