(G)I-DLE’s Soyeon Calls Out “My Teenage Girl” Audience Members For Failing To Do Their Part

MBC‘s highly anticipated survival program, My Teenage Girl premiered its first episode and it’s off to a big bang. The final 83 contestants that were chosen for the program gave it their all, as they prepared and performed their evaluation stages for the mentors. And while the show alone has been making headlines due to the ongoing hype, (G)I-DLE‘s Soyeon has started to make headlines for her brutally honest evaluation.

During the premiere episode, contestants Kim Ye Seo and Kang Seo Jin performed “Nonstop” by OH MY GIRL in matching yellow outfits. Using traditional Korean fans as introductory props, the duo gave it their all for their 3 minute long performance.

Following the conclusion of their stage, it was time for the mentors to judge the performance. (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon was the first mentor to share her thoughts on what she witnessed—and she did not hold back

The talented girl group member started off her evaluation by wondering if the “blind” round audience evaluators were able to hear the duo’s singing abilities clearly.

When the door opened, I wondered, ‘were the ‘blind’ round audition members unable to hear you guys?’

In the first episode, there were multiple rounds that the contestants had to pass. In order to be judged by the celebrity mentors, contestants had to pass the first round that was strictly voted for by the audience. This is a “blind” audition round, which means that it’s strictly based on their abilities. If the contestants successfully received more than 75% of audience votes, the door between them and the mentors would be opened—leading to the second round of evaluations from the mentors.

This is important to note given that Kim Ye Seo and Kang Seo Jin performed in front of the mentors, meaning that the duo passed the first blind audition round. This is what (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon was referring to when she asked, “were the ‘blind’ round audition members unable to hear [them]?”

Soyeon continued her direct evaluation by revealing that the duo’s “Nonstop” performance was by far the “worst performance” she had seen and it was so bad, she “didn’t even get mad.”

Of all the stages that I’ve watched today, it was the worst performance I saw. It was so bad, I didn’t even get mad.

The (G)I-DLE member continued by revealing the exact reason behind her previous statement and her overall disappointment. She shared that there were numerous other talented contestants before the “Nonstop” duo that the mentors were unable to meet—which Girls’ Generation‘s Yuri agreed with.

Girls’ Generation’s Yuri commenting, “you’re right” to (G)I-DLE Soyeon’s comment.

There were so many talented contestants that we were unable to meet because the door was not opened for them.

— (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon

However, this was not the end of Soyeon’s brutally honest evaluation. The girl group member called out the audience members in charge of the “blind” round auditions for not doing their part correctly.

This is a place where we are taking the dreams of contestants and evaluating them on their abilities. I believe that the audience members judging the ‘blind’ round stages should have pressed their buttons with that kind of responsibility.

— (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon

She concluded her evaluation with just 5 words to sum up the entire situation.

Honestly, I’m a bit angry.
